RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

Heralded as the world’s most prestigious horticultural event, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show 2017, opens to the public from Tuesday 23rd May 2017 until Saturday 27th May 2017.  Visitors will be treated to exhibits showcasing the latest new plant introductions, alongside beautiful gardens, which demonstrate the latest ideas in garden and landscape design, many of which feature new, rare, unusual, and interesting plants, together with much loved old favourites.

New Introductions from David Austin Roses for 2017

Whenever I visit the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, I always rush over to David Austin Roses stand, with a great sense of anticipation, hope, and excitement in my heart to see David Austin’s newly unveiled roses.  I am always as keen as mustard to discover for myself the fragrances of David Austin’s latest rose releases, which are launched at this prestigious flower show each year.

White Orchid BiOrbAir Terrarium Trial (part two)

Welcome to the second part of my White Orchid BiOrbAir Terrarium Trial.

I decided to plant up this White Orchid BiOrbAir Terrarium in April 2017, after receiving many requests from readers asking about white flowered, miniature, epiphytic orchids.  I didn’t have a spare terrarium available to plant at the time, so I decided to empty, and then re-plant my long-term review BiOrbAir terrarium with a variety of species of white flowered orchids, to showcase how beautiful a single colour planting scheme for terrariums, vivariums, orchidariums, or bottle gardens, can be.

BiOrbAir Review – Growing Miniature Orchids in the BiOrbAir (part thirteen)

Welcome to the thirteenth part of my BiOrbAir Review – Growing Miniature Orchids in the BiOrbAir.  The BiOrbAir is a specialised, automated terrarium, designed by Barry Reynolds from BiOrb.  I first planted this Miniature Orchid Trial BiOrbAir Terrarium in August 2015, so at the time of writing – in May 2017, this BiOrbAir terrarium is 21 months old.  Some, though not all, of the miniature orchids that are currently growing inside this terrarium were featured in the original planting of this terrarium, which took place in August 2015.

How to mount epiphytic orchids onto cork

I so enjoy growing miniature, epiphytic orchids.  When I am mounting epiphytic orchids, usually I use cork bark as a mount, although sometimes I will use other woods to mount my orchids, it all depends on which orchid I am growing, and what materials I have.

I hope this information will help you, if you’re mounting epiphytic orchids onto cork bark or other wood, or if you’d just like to learn more about these diverse and interesting plants.

New Features of the New BiOrbAir Terrarium

This is my new terrarium, The Madagascar BiOrbAir Terrarium. This terrarium is planted up with plants which have been grown in cultivation, but originate from Madagascar, pictured on the 9th April 2017. BiOrbAir terrarium features

I love my BiOrbAir terrariums!  I so enjoy growing miniature orchids, ferns, and other terrarium plants inside these specialised, automated terrariums.  I loved the older BiOrbAir terrarium models, but I have been so impressed with the new 2017 BiOrbAir terrarium model, and the fantastic improvements that have been made to this new, updated terrarium, which was designed by Barry Reynolds.

The Madagascar BiOrbAir Terrarium

I am so very lucky to have a beautiful, new BiOrbAir terrarium!

I decided to plant up this very special terrarium with orchids that are endemic to Madagascar, to highlight and raise awareness of the fragility of this very special place on Earth, and showcase the beauty of Madagascar’s plants.  Many of the orchids that are endemic to Madagascar are not found anywhere else on Earth.

White Orchid BiOrbAir Terrarium Trial

The simplicity and beauty of white flowers are enjoyed and appreciated by many of us.  I have received many requests to plant up a terrarium with white flowered, miniature, epiphytic orchids, so I have now emptied and re-planted my specialised, automated, BiOrbAir terrarium, which was designed by Barry Reynolds and is available from BiOrb, with a variety of white-flowering orchids, to showcase how beautiful a single colour planting scheme for terrariums, vivariums, orchidariums, or bottle gardens can be.

Protecting your Plants from Slugs and Snails

For many gardeners, the slug and snail population seemed to explode in 2016, with many fraught and distressed gardeners asking for my advice on the best way to protect their plants from slugs and snails.  I am strongly opposed to slug pellets.  I wouldn’t wish to kill any of the slugs or snails in my garden as I believe a healthy eco system is important.
