I so enjoyed catching up with Jonathan Hogarth, from Hogarth Hostas, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016, where the RHS judges awarded the Hogarth Hostas exhibit a Silver-Gilt Medal.
PB: Hello Jonathan, your stand looks absolutely lovely, congratulations! I wondered if you have any tips that I could share with my readers for growing miniature Hostas?
HH: …You see, the more heat you put into a plant, it’ll look rubbish this year, but next year it’ll be twice the size. The sun actually does a lot of work for us. If you’ve got something that’s been nibbled, you might think “Well, that’s no good for anything!” Just put it to one side in the sun, and again it’ll be twice as big next year.
PB: What a great tip, thank you! Congratulations on your medal here at Chelsea!
HH: I spoke to the Judge, and he gave me a Silver-Gilt Medal here at Chelsea. Now I’d never done a show until last year. Never done a show, not one! But because I’m a National Collection Holder, they asked me if I’d actually come along and do a show. I said “No!”
So four months before Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2015, they said “Go on, go on! You’ve got to do it!” So I thought “Oh, go on then”. And when I got there on judging day, I spoke to the lady who is the secretary, and they’re only allowed to say some things. She said, “I think you’ll be pleased, as you’ve had some nice comments about it”. I said “That’ll do! I’m more than happy with that”, and when I got there the next day, I’d won gold!
Now, I’d never done a show before, and all I do is display my plants at home on the shelf, which is what we have here! Again, you get used to putting different plants together – you don’t want the same, you want green or variegated next to each other. All I’ve done is put different plants, and different shades together, and that’s all I’ve done! I won Gold at Hampton Court, and Best in my section, which was third overall for the whole show, and I’m the person who’s never done a show! And this is still my hobby! And so on the strength of that one of the exhibitors turned around and said “The only way is down now”, and I said “No – there’s one up, and that’s here at Chelsea”, and I’m so pleased, because if I was to get gold, then there would be nowhere to go!
PB: Whereas now you can come back to Chelsea next year and win a gold!
HH: Now, I spoke to to the judge earlier on, he’s a lovely man, and he said “What I would have like to have seen? I’d have liked to see the bowls at the back positioned a little higher”. I said, “I completely agree with you!” I started building the display, but I made the mistake at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show that I could get around the back, and was able to raise them up – the mistake this year is that I started building, but had to come forward. I thought I’d got the height right, they’re up on polystyrene, but they’re not high enough. He said “I’d like to see a little bit of flow, don’t take this the wrong way, it’s beautiful the way it is, but I’d have like to see a ‘flow’”. I completely agree with that, and I said thank you so much for all the help, and thank you for judging it, because I didn’t expect that!
PB: I’m really pleased for you Jonathan, it’s wonderful to get such great feedback, and to find a way to improve your exhibit.
HH: Morris next door is from Scotland, he met the queen, and of course she came past here too!
PB: How wonderful Jonathan! I hope you enjoy every moment of your success at Chelsea, congratulations! I hope to see you at Hampton Court in July, and at Chelsea next year.
