I use strips of material cut from stockings and twine to secure many of my plants in place. A variety of different plant ties are now available, some plant ties, like these reusable VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties, make life easier for gardeners as they don’t require tying in, and can also be reused many times.
I felt that these VELCRO® Brand plant ties would be ideal for everyone, but perhaps they are especially useful for those of us who have difficulty in tying knots, or have difficulty reaching up, or down, to tie in and secure their plants. The simplicity and ease of use of these Velcro plant ties would be so very helpful for these gardeners, as their plants can be secured in moments.
The VELCRO® Brand tape is supplied on a roll, so it can be cut to any size you require. As these plant ties are made from Velcro, they quickly and easily adhere to themselves, creating a simple, strong, and effective loop, which means you can tie in and secure your plants using the minimal amount of time and effort.
These VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant ties are ideal for tying in herbaceous perennials, Sweet Peas, and other annual cut flowers. I have found that Velcro plant ties work especially well for delicate plants, they are an ideal choice if you’re looking to tie in and secure Clematis, or other plants with delicate, thin stems. You can also use the Velcro plant ties indoors, to support orchids and other house plants.
The inside of the VELCRO® Brand plant ties are quite soft, this is part of their design to ensure the plant ties aren’t abrasive against delicate plant stems. Even the outside of the VELCRO® Brand plant ties – the part that sticks together – is not anywhere near as rough as I was expecting.
I have found that if you cut a larger length of the VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap plant tie than you need, giving yourself a longer length of wrap, and a greater overlap of VELCRO® Brand tape around your plant stem, you will greatly improve the strength of your plant tie. This would be useful if you were using these Velcro plant ties to secure a grape vine or another heavy cropping fruit or vegetable.
You could also use a longer length of VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Tie if you were looking to secure a plant in place, and knew that the width of the plant’s stem would grow wider over time, and so in future a longer length of plant tie would be required. As your plant grows, you’re able to loosen your VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Tie, readjusting the tie as required in a matter of moments.
I love growing Sweet Peas! I find that naturally grown, wigwam sweet peas with their curling, twinning, tendrils, beautifully secure themselves to their wigwams, and need no further support or tying in. But if you wanted to tie your Sweet Pea plants to their support, to get them started in the right direction, the VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Tie would be an ideal choice to direct your plants up their support. When the VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties are no longer required at the end of the season, they are easily retrieved, and can be reused for the next season and beyond.
Cordon grown Sweet Pea plants have their tendrils removed, and so plants grown using this method need to be tied in. For my 2016 Sweet Pea Trial, all of my cordon grown plants were secured using Sweet Pea rings – metal rings, which quickly and easily open to secure the plants in place. Metal Sweet Pea rings have the benefit of being reusable.
These VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties would be an alternative, reusable, plant tie for Sweet Pea plants. The VELCRO® Brand plant ties are easily secured in place to support your Sweet Pea plants, and they are just as easily untied and then re-fastened – a real benefit when it comes to dropping down the Sweet Pea plants to layer them, and then securing the plants back up against their canes or supports.
I have successfully used the VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties to secure Wisteria along a length of wire to train the plant horizontally.
As well as being reusable, the VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties are washable. I have washed my VELCRO® Brand plant ties in my washing machine, with great results.
These reusable VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties would make a super gift, I think they would make a great stocking filler at Christmas time, they would also be ideal for anyone wishing to secure Christmas lights to outdoor trees and shrubs.
I opted for the green colour way for my VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties, but other colours are available. To purchase these VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Plant Ties, or for more information, please click here.
