Snowdrop Events Calendar 2019

Welcome to my 2019 Snowdrop Gardens, Talks, Events, and Open Days Calendar!  Here are the dates, and all the details of the openings of some of the most beautiful and magnificent snowdrop gardens across the UK, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, and Germany; these gardens are all opening especially, to allow visitors to experience the joy of seeing their snowdrop collections.  You’ll also find details of snowdrop study days, open days, talks, lectures, and any other lovely snowdrop events happening in 2019!

It might seem as if I am publishing this calendar a little early, but for some snowdrop events, places are limited and prior booking is required – I don’t want any of my lovely readers to miss out.  As I discover the dates and details of more snowdrop events, I will update this calendar – if I’ve missed your snowdrop event, please contact me with the details, and I will update this calendar to include your event.  I hope you’ll enjoy the coming snowdrop season and this magical time of year!

At the very top of this calendar, I have broken down all of this calendar’s snowdrop events by month and by country (where further afield that the UK and Ireland).  Click on the month that you want to view events for, to save you scrolling through any events that have passed already, or are not of interest to you.

Snowdrop Events held in January 2019

On Saturday 12th January 2019, the Snowdrop Man, Michael D. Myers will be giving a talk entitled ‘Snowdrops and Snowflakes‘, at 2.30pm, at Ponteland Memorial Hall, Darras Road, Ponteland, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE20 9NX.  Michael will explain how to have snowdrops and snowflakes in flower, in your garden from October to April.  This event is hosted by Plant Heritage North East, entrance is £3, with free entry for Plant Heritage Members.

Harveys Garden Plants, Great Green, Thurston, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP31 3SJ, are holding their annual Celebration of Snowdrops day from 10am until 2pm, on Saturday 19th January 2019.  This lovely celebration of snowdrops is held undercover, so visitors are protected from the worst of the weather.  This event provides visitors with a chance to see and buy rare snowdrop varieties from Harveys Garden Plants, Glen Chantry, John Foster, Michael Broadhurst, and Edulis Nursery.   There’s a 20% reduction on purchases of perennial plants (excluding bulbs) from Harveys Garden Plants.  Light refreshments will be available all day in the cafe.  Entrance is £2.50 per person, £2 for RHS members.  Customers usually start queuing outside the nursery, from 8.30am.

On Saturday 26th January 2019Myddelton House Gardens, Bulls Cross, Enfield, Middlesex, EN2 9HG, will be holding their Ultimate Snowdrop Sale, which opens from 10.30am until 12 noon.  A select range of nurseries will be selling both rare and more commonly seen snowdrops.  There’s a suggested donation of £3.50 and a small charge for parking.  For all the details, please click here.

At Welford Park, Welford, Newbury, Berkshire, RG20 8HU, you can visit Welford’s picturesque beech woods, which are underplanted with carpets of Galanthus nivalis.  While the rarer snowdrop varieties can be found in the formal gardens.  The gardens at Welford Park are open from Wednesday 30th January 2019 until Sunday 3rd March 2019, opening from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am until 4pm.  Please note – the gardens at Welford Park are always closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Welford Park is a private home, please check their opening times before visiting the gardens, if you’re interested, you’ll find all the details here.

On Thursday 31st January 2019Welford Park, Welford, Newbury, Berkshire, RG20 8HU, are holding a Plant Sale from 11am until 4pm.  This Plant Sale will be a weekly event, held every Thursday, during the garden’s opening period.

Snowdrop Events held in February 2019

Dawyck Botanic Gardens, Stobo, near Peebles, in the Scottish Borders, EH45 9JU, are open daily from 1st February 2019, from 10am until 4pm.  Dawyck is a truly wonderful, beautiful, very steep, hilly, woodland garden, which features beautiful swathes of snowdrops during February and March each year.  Entrance is £6.50 for adults, £5.50 for concessions, free for children and essential carers, and RBGE members also enter free of charge.  For all the details, please click here.

On Friday 1st February 2019East Lambrook Manor Gardens,  East Lambrook, South Petherton, Somerset, TA13 5HH, open their gardens with their Margery Fish Festival of Snowdrops!  With one hundred different snowdrop varieties, East Lambrook Manor Gardens have an impressive display of named snowdrops in their special display bed.  Visitors can find lots of named snowdrops around the gardens.  East Lambrook Manor Gardens open from 10am until 5pm, from Tuesday to Sunday (they are closed on Mondays).  For all the details, please click here.

On Friday 1st February 2019, at 7.30pm, A Celebration of Corona North will be held at Ballykealey Manor Hotel, near Altamont, Ballon, Co Carlow, Ireland, an evening of light refreshments and talks by Paul Cutler.  If you’d like to attend this special event, booking is essential, tickets are €10, please contact Robert Miller of Altamont Plants – telephone Robert on 087 982 2135 or email sales@altamontplants.com

The Alpine Garden Society are holding their annual Snowdrop Day from 9am until 4pm, on Saturday 2nd February 2019, at Ford Hall, Lilleshall National Conferencing Centre, Newport, Shropshire, TF10 9AT.  The AGS Snowdrop Day features snowdrop lectures from: Richard Hobbs, who will be giving a talk about, ‘Plants and People: an A-Z’, Jim Almond, who is giving a lecture entitled, ‘Snowdrops: the Theme is Green, and Anne Wright, who will be giving a talk entitled, ‘Making More Snowdrops’.  There will also be a snowdrop question and answer session.  Attendees can purchase snowdrops at the AGS Plant Sale, which is open until 4.30pm, nurseries attending include: Matt Bishop, Edulis, Monksilver, Glen Chantry, Jim Almond, and Woodchippings.  There will also be an AGS stand, where a selection of gardening books and merchandise are available for purchase.  This is a popular event where the tickets are sold in advance, and places are limited – it’s wise to buy your tickets early.  For all the information, including details of the hot two course lunch and coffee, please click here.

Colesbourne Park, Colesbourne, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL53 9NP, offer private, weekday snowdrop tours for groups, clubs and societies during February 2019.  Tours are guided by Sir Henry Elwes or Lady Elwes, together with Colesbourne Park’s Head Gardener, Arthur Cole; the garden tours give a uniquely personal look at the snowdrop collection and the gardens.  Tours start at 11am or 2 pm, prior booking is required, for all the details, please click here.

Forde Abbey, Chard, Somerset, TA20 4LU, are holding special Snowdrop Weekends every weekend in February, from Saturday 2nd February 2019, until Sunday 24th February 2019, from 10.30am until 4.30pm.  Visitors will be able to enjoy the 30 acres of gardens carpeted in a spectacular display of snowdrops.  Visitors will be able to admire large numbers of Galanthus nivalis, as well as the double form, Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus ‘Flore Pleno‘, and Galanthus atkinsii in the Rock Garden.  Entrance is charged at the reduced rate of £5 for adults and £2.50 for children, during February, for all the details, please click here.

Forde Abbey, Chard, Somerset, TA20 4LU, are holding special Snowdrop Tours every Saturday morning in February, from Saturday 2nd February 2019, until Saturday 23rd February 2019, from 10am until 12 noon, Forde Abbey’s Head Gardener, Joshua Sparkes, will be leading a tour of the gardens.  Tickets are £20 a head, which includes a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake and entry to the gardens, for all the details, please click here.

On Saturday 2nd February 2019, a Snowdrop Gala, with other spring treasures, will be held from 9.30am until 5pm, at Ballykealey Manor Hotel, near Altamont, Ballon, Co Carlow, Ireland.  Nurseryman, Ian Christie, will be giving a talk entitled ‘Snowdrops Madness: recent finds in Scotland’ and Gardener, Ian Young, will be giving a talk entitled ‘Waves of Colour’ at this special snowdrop event.  In the afternoon, there will be a guided tour of Altamont with Paul Cutler.  Avon Bulbs, Altamont Plants, Assumpta Broomfield, Coosheen Plants, Christie’s Specialist Plants, Jim Almond, and Marchants Hardy Plants, will all be at the Plant and Bulb Sale.  Tickets are €70 (make cheques payable to Robert Miller of Atamont Plants) if purchased before the 30th January 2019, which includes the lectures, lunch at Ballykealey Manor, admission to the bulb sale, a guided tour, and afternoon tea and cake at Altamont.  To book your place at this special Snowdrop Gala, or for more details, contact Hester Forde of Coosheen Garden – you can telephone Hester on 086 865 4972 or email – hesterforde@gmail.com, or alternatively contact Robert Miller of Altamont Plants – telephone Robert on 087 982 2135 or email sales@altamontplants.com

On Tuesday 5th February 2019Ashwood Nurseries, Ashwood Lower Lane, Kingswinford, West Midlands, DY6 0AE, are holding morning (10.45am) and afternoon (2.15pm) Snowdrop lectures and special garden tours of ‘John’s Garden’.  Snowdrop Expert, Nurseryman Alan Street, from Avon Bulbs, will be giving a lecture entitled ‘Snowdrops at Avon Bulbs’, and there will be the opportunity to visit John’s Garden.  Refreshments are available in the Tea Room.  Named snowdrops, Hellebores, ferns, and winter and spring flowering bulbs will be available to purchase.  All tickets must be booked in advance, tickets are £22.50 each, for all the information, please click here.

On Wednesday 6th February 2019Myddelton House Gardens, Bulls Cross, Enfield, Middlesex, EN2 9HG, will be holding their Gardeners’ Snowdrop Coffee Morning, which opens from 10am until 11.30am.  Join Myddelton House’s Gardeners for a tour of their snowdrops with a hot drink and a slice of cake. From Wednesday 6th February 2019 until Sunday 3rd March 2019, from 12 noon until 4pm, Benington Lordship Gardens, Benington Lordship, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG2 7BS, are holding their Snowdrop Open Days, where visitors can admire the large drifts of snowdrops that feature in the gardens, the garden features many other plants with winter interest, such as hellebores, aconites, and winter flowering shrubs.  Benington Lordship Gardens have a collection of rare and unusual snowdrops, including two hundred labelled snowdrop varieties.  Single and double snowdrops, together with a limited number of named snowdrop varieties will be offered for sale, for all the details, please click here.

On Saturday 9th February 2019, the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Study Day opens at 9.15am for registration, tea and coffee.  First, at 10am, Jane Kilpatrick and Jennifer Harmer will be giving a talk entitled, ‘The Galanthophiles – Snowdrop Devotees – 1854-2014’.  Next, at 11am, Tom Mitchell will be giving a talk, ‘Extreme Snowdropping – adventures in search of wild snowdrops part 2’.  Then from 12 noon until 1pm, there will be access to the snowdrop sale.  There’s soup and cake for lunch, which is followed by a Guided Tour of the Heritage Snowdrops at Shaftesbury with Emma Thick.  Then Andy McIndoe will be giving a talk, entitled, ‘The Winter Garden’, with the event closing at 4pm.  For all the details, please click here.

On Sunday 10th February 2019, there’s a Snowdrop and Early Spring Plant Fair at Hole Park, Benenden Road, Rolvenden, Kent, TN17 4JA.  This special plant fair opens from 11am until 3pm, admission is £4.

On Saturday 16th February 2019, the Scottish Rock Garden Club will be holding their Early Bulb Day from 10am until 4pm, at Victoria Hall, Dunblane, Scotland, FK15 9EX.  The speakers at this event will be Ian Christie and Ian Young, visitors can also enjoy seasonal displays and plant sales.  For all the details, please click here.

Knowle Hill Farm, Ulcombe, Maidstone, Kent, ME17 1ES, will be opening on Saturday 16th February 2019, Sunday 17th February 2019, and Monday 18th February 2019, from 11am until 3pm, for the NGS.  This two acre garden, which is situated on the south facing slopes of the North Downs, has been in creation for the past thirty years.  Visitors can admire the gardens’ snowdrops, which include 100 named varieties, a spreading carpet of Galanthus nivalis, and self sown Galanthus elwesii and Galanthus plicatus, amongst hellebores and topiary.  Visitors will also appreciate the hot sausage rolls served on these special open days!  The owner of Knowle Hill Farm is happy to receive small groups of visitors with prior notice during February, please see Knowle Hill Farm’s website for contact details, or telephone 01622 850240 to make a booking.  Spring Platt is another snowdrop garden that is near Knowle Hill Farm, for all the details, please click here.

From Saturday 16th February 2019 until Sunday 17th March 2019, Bruckhills Croft, Rothienorman, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, AB51 6YB, Scotland, will be opening by arrangement, for the Scottish Snowdrop Festival.  Visitors can delight in seeing 450 snowdrop varieties in Bruckhills Croft’s garden, with a selection of snowdrops available for purchase in their plant sales area.  Entry is £4 for adults, with no charge for children.  Please contact the owner if you wish to visit this garden, telephone 01651 821596, or find more details on this garden’s Facebook page.

On Saturday 16th February 2019 and Monday 18th February 2019, Shirley Carman-Martin will be opening her garden, 5 Whitemans Close, Cuckfield, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 5DE for the NGS Snowdrop Festival.   There’s lots to see in this small, but very pretty cottage garden, which features 150 different snowdrop varieties, alongside Hellebores and winter flowering shrubs.  Refreshments will be available.  Contact the owner on, 01444 473520 to book your place.  Please note this small garden features a few steps and is not suitable for visitors in wheelchairs.

Great Comp Gardens are usually closed during February, so this special day, The Snowdrop Sensation Plant Fair, held on Sunday 17th February 2019, (The Plant Fair is open from 10am until 12 noon, but Great Comp Gardens are open until 4pm) is a lovely opportunity to view Great Comp’s collection of snowdrops, hellebores, and other winter flowering plants and purchase some pretty snowdrops and early spring flowering plants.  Val Bourne will be giving a talk entitled ‘Tales of the Unexpected – Strange Encounters with Galanthophiles Past and Present’.  The tea room will be serving delicious lunches and refreshments.  For all the details, please click here.

2019 Snowdrop Events in Belgium

On Saturday 9th February 2019 and Sunday 10th February 2019Arboretum Kalmthout, Huevel 8, 2920 Kalmthout, (near Antwerp), Belgium, are holding a special Snowdrop Weekend at exhibition venue vangeertenhof, which opens from 10am until 5pm on both days.  There will be many snowdrops available for purchase with expert advice on growing snowdrops given on the Saturday of this snowdrop themed weekend.  Free garden tours to see the snowdrops are offered from 11am until 4pm on Sunday.  For all the details, please click here.

2019 Snowdrop Events in Holland

Flower Bulb Tour East Groningen

2019 marks the 12th anniversary of the flower bulb tour in East Groningen, Holland.  A large number of additional bulbs were planted last autumn to ensure a spectacular display for visitors to East Groningen in 2019 and beyond.  Each of the four gardens that open for this special event are very different, each garden has its own character and atmosphere.

East Groningen are holding special Snowdrop Sundays from 11am until 5pm on: Sunday 24th February 2019, and Sunday 3rd March 2019.

Following the Snowdrop Sundays, Crocus Sundays will be held from 11am until 5pm on: Sunday 17th March 2019, Sunday 14th April 2019, Sunday 21st April 2019, and Sunday 28th April 2019 when visitors can enjoy seeing a number of spring flowers.

Visitors will find that even the roadsides outside this 20.000 m2 garden are covered with spring flowering bulbs!  This landscape garden features a number of large boulders, and a large snowdrop and crocus meadow.

This 2.500m2 garden features an array of spring flowers, including a variety of different snowdrops, Camellias, Crocus, Puschkinias, Muscari, Fritillaries, and Scillas.  In March and April visitors can also see Narcissus, Tulips, and early flowering Primulas.

Tuinfleur’, Rika en Pieter van Delden, Nieuweweg 34, 9682 RM Oostwold, tuinfleur@planet.nlwww.tuinfleur.nl.
This 6.000 m2, long (350m) and narrow garden is divided into ten separate rooms.  Situated on the shores of the Oldambtlake, there are great variety of plants growing in this garden.  Visitors can admire thousands of snowdrops, which include 150 different cultivars!  Vistors can also enjoy Scilla, Muscari, Chionodoxia, Narcisus, Tulips, Allium, Leucojum, and Hellebores.

This 1.700 m2 woodland garden features carpets of early spring snowdrops, which are followed by wild spring flowers and Narcissus, which cover the garden later in springtime.

‘Schneeglöckchentage im Luisenpark’ / ‘Snowdrop Days in Luisenpark’

The Luisenpark Snowdrop Days at Mannheim are becoming a fixture in the diary of Galanthophiles.

Anne Repnow has announced that the next snowdrops days at Luisenpark will take place on Saturday 23rd February 2019 and Sunday 24th February 2019!

On Saturday 23rd February 2019, Joe Sharman will give a talk entitled, ‘Galanthus reginae-olgae Autumn blooming snowdrops’.

On Sunday 24th February 2019, Jürgen Peters will give a talk entitled, ‘The world of Hepatica’.  To illustrate his talk, Joe will also bring a small ‘Hepatica Landscape’ with him, to demonstrate the magic of these little jewel-like plants.
