Jonathan Hogarth and his Hostas, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019!

Hogarth Hostas at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019

I am always hoping to meet a new favourite plant at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but as well as plants, I enjoy finding some of my favourite people at Chelsea.  Jonathan Hogarth is one of my favourites; he’s utterly bonkers about Hostas!  Jonathan holds a National Collection of Miniature Hostas, he also runs Hogarth Hostas – a specialist Hosta nursery.  This man is incredibly passionate about growing Hostas, he’s great fun, too!

Jonathan Hogarth told me all about his Hostas and showed me his fantastic exhibit, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019.

The theme of Hogarth Hosta’s Chelsea exhibit is fun, family gardening

This year, Jonathan designed his Hosta exhibit to be set around the theme of family gardening.  Jonathan has imagined a young child gardening with their grandparents, who are keen Hosta growers.  The larger wheelbarrows on the stand are filled with pots of attractive Hostas, as is the child’s tiny wheelbarrow.  The wheelbarrows represent the child helping his grandparents in the garden.  Not understanding the destructive tendencies of slugs and snails, who love to devour Hostas, the grandchild has added snails to his wheelbarrow, so there are snails on his Grandfather’s prized Hostas!  Thankfully, this is all imagined and the slugs and snails aren’t real.

This lovely wooden wheelbarrow contains pots of Hosta ‘Lakeside Neat Petite’, Hosta ‘Bedford Rise and Shine’, Hosta Funny Mouse’, Hosta ‘Teaspoon’, Hosta ‘Elsey Runner’, and Hosta ‘Little Ice Mouse’.

Hogarth Hostas have introduced a new Hosta cultivar at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.  Meet Hosta ‘Ruffled Pole Mouse’, a sport of Hosta ‘Green Mouse Ears’ with creamy white coloured leaves, which are highlighted with a medium to dark green coloured outline that has a rather painterly quality.  In the summertime, Hosta ‘Ruffled Pole Mouse’ produces lavender coloured flowers.

Hosta ‘Ruffled Pole Mouse’ was chosen as one of the top twenty shortlisted plants, at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2019 Competition.

A closer look at the leaves of this new Hosta – Hosta ‘Ruffled Pole Mouse’.  Hosta ‘Ruffled Pole Mouse’ leaves emerge as creamy white, with a mid to dark green leaf margin, which gives the leaves a lovely outline.  This Hosta’s leaves remain the same colour, all season.
