The Secret Lives of Garden Bees
Author: Jean Vernon
Publisher: White Owl
I am fascinated by bees. I’ve so enjoyed reading Jean Vernon’s book, The Secret Lives of Garden Bees; I love the author’s ethos for spreading bee-love! I want to help bee-love spread far and wide and so I’m sharing my appreciation for Jean Vernon’s book with you; hoping that through reading this super book, you’ll fall head-over-heels in love with these intriguing insects and share the same desire to help bees, too.
This lovely book feels like a warm and friendly, welcoming introduction to bees; telling you all the things you’d really like to know but didn’t know who to ask. It’s not a text book; you won’t find pictures of every single bee that has ever been sighted in the UK. Instead, the author focuses our attention on the bees that you’re most likely to discover in your garden. The Secret Lives of Garden Bees is an interesting and calming book to read; you’ll hear intriguing and engaging stories about bees, which I’m certain will pique your interest in this absorbing topic.
A lovely aspect of this book is that for every bee that Jean Vernon has featured, the author advises on the habitats that the particular bee species inhabits, as well as providing information on which plants the bees tend to visit. There is information on how to identify each bee species and tips on the time of year and details of where and when you’re most likely to be able to spot that particular type of bee. Jean gives advice and ideas on how to help bees, including tips for beneficial bee plants to include in your garden, or at your allotment, school, or work place.
The Secret Lives of Garden Bees is peppered with helpful tips on how to invest a respect for bees in children. This book would be a super gift for a family looking for activities to do together in their garden; it would be especially useful during this period of social isolation, as we remain at home to avoid catching and transmitting COVID-19. To be honest, I find it hard to think of anyone that wouldn’t enjoy reading this book, it’s lovely!
For each bee featured, the author gives tips on that bee species’ favourite flowers; there’s also a chapter on beneficial bee plants. I’m sure that you’ll be interested to read of the interactions between garden bees and garden flowers; this is a truly fascinating topic!
Another useful section is the Season by Season in the Bee Garden chapter, which gives information on what bees are doing throughout the year. The author provides suggestions here to ensure readers are aware of what activities they can do each season to help the bees in their area. These include pointers as when to put bee boxes outside, when to bring the bee boxes inside again, how to make sugar syrup to revive exhausted bees, alongside other helpful suggestions.
It’s important to remember that if we all knew and understood bees better, then we would be better equipped to help them. I’ve relished the opportunity to read The Secret Lives of Garden Bees; I am thrilled to be able to recommend this wonderful book. I hope The Secret Lives of Garden Bees will help you and your family learn more about these fascinating insects!
