Magnificent Bluebell Woods & Bluebell Gardens to Visit

Magnificent Bluebell Woods and Bluebell Gardens

Bluebell woods are such relaxing and uplifting places to visit.  I hope you can enjoy time walking in amongst the bluebells this spring, so you can envelop yourself with the scent and beauty of these awe-inspiring flowers.  This is truly magical time of year!

I am a huge fan of our native British bluebells, which are also known by their latin name of Hyacinthoides non-scripta.  English bluebells have dainty, nodding, deep blue flowers (white and pink flowered bluebells spring up and add an extra dimension to the landscape).  I adore the scent of English bluebells; each year I look forward to being enveloped in the bluebell’s uplifting and intoxicating sweet perfume.

I must confess that I am not at all keen on the larger, more vigorous and upright Spanish bluebells – Hyacinthoides hispanica.  Spanish bluebells have paler blue flowers, which often aren’t fragrant.

Important information about bluebells

Spanish bluebells have been widely grown in UK gardens.  These bulbs have often been planted close to sites where our native UK bluebells were growing.  Both types of bluebells are related, they flower at the same time and are pollinated by the same bees and other insects.  Consequently,  the Spanish bluebell has been able to hybridise with our UK native bluebells.  This has led to our UK bluebells, which were once a common sight in springtime, becoming more scarce.  The bluebells we see more often are now Spanish bluebells or a hybrid of the two species.  We need to actively protect any remaining native bluebells.  Please don’t plant Spanish bluebells in your garden.  Never ever plant Spanish bluebells in the wild or close to sites which are home to our native UK bluebells.

When visiting a bluebell wood or garden, please look after our bluebells.  Stick to the paths.  Avoid walking through the bluebells, as you will damage the plants’ flowers and leaves, which will affect the bulbs’ flowering in the following years.  Many of the bluebell woods that produced the most impressive flowering displays have suffered in recent years, due to walkers trampling over the plants to take photographs.  In some areas, a quarter of the bluebells have been lost due to inconsiderate visitors wishing to take photographs.  I am sure that many of these visitors were entirely unaware of the consequences of their actions, which is why I wanted to write this note and raise awareness.
