When we think of summertime we often think of roses.  I adore scented roses!  I love growing roses and visiting rose gardens.  Here are some lovely gardens where you can celebrate and immerse yourself in the rose’s beauty and fragrance.

 Saturday 1 June 2024 - Sunday 2 June 2024: Harrogate Open Gardens: Stone Rings Close


Harrogate Open Gardens: Stone Rings Close is from 12 noon until 5pm on Saturday 1st June 2024 and Sunday 2nd June 2024, when approximately 5 private gardens will open in Stone Rings Close, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG2 9HZ. These private gardens are opening to share their herbaceous borders and late spring flowering shrubs. The topography is challenging on several of the gardens as they slope down to Stone Rings Beck, thus there are some steep paths. Each garden is different. One of the gardens will host a dance group and there will be a children's quiz. Refreshments will be available. No dogs please, other than assistance dogs.  Sunday 2 June 2024: Wass Open Gardens, Scarecrows and Plant Sale


Wass Open Gardens, Scarecrows and Plant Sale is from 12 noon until 5pm on Sunday 2nd June 2024, when approximately 10 private gardens will open in Wass, near Helmsley, Yorkshire, YO61 4AX. Wass is small village in North Yorkshire, situated on the southern edge of the North York Moors. There will be produce and bric-a-brac stalls. Acorn Morris will dance at 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Teas will be served in the Village Hall. Proceeds to Wass Church, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Community Works, Thirsk. There will be a plant stall. Great Ouseburn Open Gardens and Plant Sale is from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 2nd June 2024, when approximately 17 private gardens will open in Great Ouseburn, North Yorkshire, YO26 9RL. A fantastic day out in one of North Yorkshire's most picturesque and friendly villages. Seventeen spectacular gardens open, varying in shapes and sizes. Talks and demos on gardening, food and drinks. A new addition for your garden at the plant stall in the vicarage garden.  Thursday 6 June 2024: Skipwith Hall Garden Opening & Plant Stall


Skipwith Hall is opening from 1pm until 4pm for the NGS on Thursday 6th June 2024 at Skipwith Hall, Skipwith, Selby, Yorkshire, YO8 5SQ. Directions: 9m S of York, 6m N of Selby. From York A19 Selby, L in Escrick, 4m to Skipwith. From Selby A19 York, R onto A163 to Market Weighton, then L after 2m to Skipwith. This opening is a lovely opportunity to explore this four acre, historic walled garden with formal gardens in part designed by Cecil Pinsent. There are wildflower walks, a. 'No-dig' kitchen garden with herb maze, Italian garden, collection of old-fashioned shrub roses and climbers. No dig veg, meadows, espaliered and fan trained fruit. Sunday 9th June 2024 the gardens at Gresgarth Hall will open from 11am until 5pm.  Gresgarth Hall, Caton, Lancaster, LA2 9NB.  Take the M6 to junction 34 then A683 to Caton(2 miles), turn right towards Quernmore, along the Quernmore Road and after half a mile you reach the entrance on your left on the sharp bend.  The Garden includes terraces, lakes, a small bog garden, a wild garden, an extensive kitchen garden, the Millennium Wood, the Rhododendron Hills, the herbaceous borders and a serpentine walk.  Visitors can purchase an eclectic mix of garden plants and ornaments from various nurseries.  Sunday 9 June 2024: Kirkbymoorside In Bloom Open Gardens


Kirkbymoorside In Bloom Open Gardens is from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Sunday 9th June 2024, when approximately ten private gardens will open in Kirkbymoorside, between Pickering and Helmsley, Yorkshire, YO62 6AA. An established popular event that includes a delightful variety of gardens, many within walking distance of the town centre. Members of the Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will be giving a performance in the town centre at 1pm. Tea and scones are included and will be served in the Quaker Meeting House's secluded and peaceful garden from 1pm. Not all gardens can provide disabled access. Assistance dogs welcome in all gardens; other dogs with the permission of individual gardeners. Proceeds support the voluntary work of the Kirkby In Bloom group. The Dalemain Plant Fair will be held on Sunday 9th June 2024 from 10am until 4pm at Dalemain House and Gardens, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 0HB.  Visitors can purchase plants from specialist nurseries on the front lawn.  There will also be a range of quality Artisan stalls, selling delicious homemade food and beautiful wares.  As well as a fantastic range of nurseries, visitors enjoy discounted entry to the Historic Gardens. This ticket also entitles you to a Garden Tour with the Dalemain Head Gardener, who will be happy to tell visitors all about the changes taking place in the gardens, and the highlights of what to see in the gardens in June. Brigsteer Open Gardens is from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 15th June 2024 and Sunday 16th June 2024, when approximately 15 private gardens will open in Brigsteer Village, near Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 8AJ. Brigsteer is a beautiful Lakeland village on the slopes of Scout Scar / Helsington Barrows. The gardens are very interesting due to the terrain and the views across the Lyth Valley. There will be composting advice and information along with various other stalls. Refreshments and cakes will be served at the Village hall and in one of the gardens at the southern end of the village. Kirkby Lonsdale Open Gardens is from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday 15th June 2024 and Sunday 16th June 2024, when approximately 10 private gardens will open in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, LA6 2BE. Gardens will be open to view in the lovely small market town of Kirkby Lonsdale on the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire, close to the River Lune. The gardens are in the centre of town. Croft-on-Tees Open Gardens is on from 10.30am to 5pm on Saturday 15th June 2024 and Sunday 16th June 2024 at Croft-on-Tees, near Darlington, North Yorkshire, DL2 2SF. There will be approximately 18 gardens open in the childhood village home of Lewis Carroll. The village gardens range from the smallest patch, to cottage gardens, riverside gardens with beautiful views, to large halls. There will be a Lewis Carroll exhibition in the Church. Enjoy a food and drink break at the Village Hall. Dogs on leads are welcome. There will be plant sales in some individual gardens and gardeners willing to give gardening advice. From Darlington, along A167 Croft Road, enter the village over the River Tees bridge past the Croft Hotel, then take the 1st right just 50 yards to the signposted car park field. From Northallerton, take the A167 to Croft-on-Tees, enter the village and take the 1st left for 50 yards to the signposted car park field. North Ferriby is a lovely village with a thriving community and there are new gardens opening for the first time. There will be other attractions besides the open gardens event including a Scarecrow competition. All proceeds will go to North Ferriby school.  Sunday 16 June 2024: Brompton-by-Sawdon Open Gardens


Brompton-by-Sawdon Open Gardens and Plant Sale is from 1pm until 4pm on Sunday 16th June 2024, when approximately 15 gardens open Brompton by Sawdon, west of Scarborough, Yorkshire, YO13 9DL. Brompton is a village of stone cottages and houses through which a beck babbles. It is on the edge of the North York Moors and has two claims to fame. William Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson in the 12th century village church (which will be open) and Sir George Cayley invented the first flying machine here. Cottingham Open Gardens takes place from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 16th June 2024 in Cottingham, North Humberside, East Riding, Yorkshire, HU16 4DE.  Private gardens will be opening for this special occasion.  Each garden shall have a variety of entertainment, music, afternoon teas, plants for sale and other activities taking place to help raise proceeds for the local hospice. Birstwith Open Gardens and Plant Sale is from 10am until 4pm (last map sale at 3.00pm) on Saturday 22nd June 2024, when approximately 10 private gardens will open Birstwith, Yorkshire, HG3 2NG. Come along and enjoy a wide variety of gardens in this beautiful Nidderdale village - from a row of back gardens on the same street that have widely different looks, to terraced hillside gardens and all sorts in between. A Scarecrow trail will also be running across the village for younger visitors. Refreshments, cakes and bacon butties will be available. This is the second Open Gardens in the beautiful conservation village of Cloughton on the outskirts of Scarborough and the North Yorkshire Moors. This event has become a lovely, lively community effort and has also linked in with the Flower Festival in the village church. Hampsthwaite Open Gardens and Plant Sale is from 12.30pm until 5pm on Saturday 29th June 2024, when approximately 13 private gardens will open in Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, HG3 2EQ. This year local nearby allotments will also be opening alongside private gardens. The gardens range from small, interesting cottage gardens to large, spacious gardens, all uniquely different and some holding little surprises. Natural running water features quite beautifully in this route and there are wonderful views of surrounding countryside. Bradleys Both Open Gardens and Plant Sale is from 12 noon until 5pm on Saturday 29th June 2024, when approximately 12 private gardens will open Bradleys Both, near Skipton. North Yorkshire, BD20 9DS. Bradley in Bloom will be showcasing its environmental work in the Village Hall, its Community Garden and Community Orchard. The village school is opening its doors to show how they are teaching the importance of the environment and gardening. There is a Children's Trail with prizes - pick up your entry sheet from the Village Hall on the day. All gardens are within easy walk of the Village Hall. Refreshments and ice-creams available. No dogs please other than assistance dogs. Proceeds split between Bradley in Bloom and the Methodist Church.  Saturday 29 June 2024 - Sunday 30 June 2024: Armathwaite Open Gardens


Armathwaite Open Gardens is from 12 noon until 5pm on Saturday 29th June 2024 and Sunday 30th June 2024, when approximately 14 private gardens will open in Armathwaite, near Carlisle, Cumbria, CA4 9PF. Armathwaite has two pubs, village shop including a post office, and delightful river side walks. Why not travel by train on the Settle to Carlisle Railway and spend the day in the Eden Valley? Children are welcome; there's a free Garden Trail for them to follow. Tea and cakes will be served in the Village Hall. All proceeds from the event will be divided equally between Christ and St Mary's Church and the Village Hall. Plants for sale at various gardens. Tickets £5 each day. Buy your ticket at the tent in the centre of the village. Directions / Parking: Armathwaite is equidistant from Carlisle and Penrith. From J42 on the M6 take the A6 south for approx 7 miles and turn left off the dual carriageway just past the vilage of High Hesket. Emley Open Gardens is from 12 noon until 5pm on Saturday 29th June 2024 and Sunday 30th June 2024 when approximately 13 beautiful private gardens will open for this special event in Emley, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD8 9RW. Come and visit some of the most beautiful private gardens in the Yorkshire countryside. Emley is a compact village and most of the gardens are just a short walk from St. Michael's church. Explore wildlife-friendly gardens, gardens with spectacular herbaceous borders, colourful bedding schemes, rose gardens, water features, a knot garden and much more! Talk to the gardeners and be inspired to take new ideas home with you. To add to the atmosphere, Emley Brass Band will be playing outside church on Sunday and there will be live music in some of the gardens too. Home-made refreshments, craft sale, book stall. Blindcrake Garden Safari is from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday 30th June 2024, when approximately 10 private gardens will open at Blindcrake, near Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 0QP. Blindcrake is inside the Lake District National Park and overlooked by the glorious backdrop of Skiddaw. A variety of lovely gardens will be open within this rural parish. Most of the gardens are in the village of Blindcrake, mainly within walking distance of each other but a few are in the neighbouring hamlet of Sunderland. Totley Open Gardens is from 1pm until 5.30pm on Saturday 6th July 2024 and Sunday 7th July 2024, when approximately 14 private gardens will open in Totley, southwest of Sheffield, Yorkshire, S17 4DR. There are some interesting sloping gardens, with a mixture of flowers, trees and vegetables. See garden styles from the traditional to the more eclectic. We also have a tranquil garden beside a church and stream. There are views to the edges of the Peak District to enjoy as you wander between some of the gardens. Unfortunately the slopes do make most of the gardens unsuitable for wheelchair access. Refreshments will be available. Proceeds to go to local causes. There will be plants available for sale.  Sunday 7 July 2024: Kirkby Malzeard Open Gardens and Plant Sale


Kirkby Malzeard Open Gardens and Plant Sale opens from 12 noon until 4pm on Sunday 7th July 2024, when approximately 12 private gardens will open in Kirkby Malzeard, between Ripon and Masham, North Yorkshire, HG4 3QD. This promises to be an interesting afternoon held in this ancient village, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Gardens range from small cottage gardens to large formal (many taking part for the first time) will provide plenty of interest for keen gardeners. The village pottery will be open, and for added interest there will be scarecrows dotted around. The route will take you down both old Back Lanes as well as Main Street and the characterful Church Street, so whilst you are visiting, do look out for the old Pinfold (circa 1300) on Main Street and at St. Andrew's Church, don't miss the Norman doorway (1150) and the ancient preaching cross (circa 700) in the churchyard. Walton Open Gardens is from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 7th July 2024, when approximately 16 private gardens will open in Walton, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 6PA.  Enthusiastic village gardeners will open their gardens to visitors and share their ideas and experiences. There will be stalls in many of the gardens, a children's competition and face painting, and there is a well-equipped playground opposite the village hall. There is a grand raffle with gardening-related prizes. The New Inn will be serving meals. Plus, there will be live music in various venues around the village.  Sunday 21 July 2024: NGS Summer Opening at Goldsborough Hall


On Sunday 21st July 2024 - Goldsborough Hall, Church Street, Goldsborough, Near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, HG5 8NR will be opening from 11am until 5pm for the NGS. The grounds in July are full of interest. Garden highlights include the Rose Garden planted with old roses – Old China Blush, Little White Pet, and Comte de Chambord – interplanted with Lavender angustifolia ‘Old English and lined with lavender ‘Munstead’. The beech hedges were planted in Princess Mary’s time and the sundial in the centre is a gift to Princess Mary from the people of Horton, Oxon. The two 120ft herbaceous borders were planted in a Gertrude Jeykll style in 2006 and include ever-lasting sweetpeas, irises, helianthus, rudbeckia and dahlias. There are magnificent and ancient trees in the grounds including a giant redwood, a very rare sorbus, a pseudo acacia from the 1750s and one of the oldest horsechestnuts left standing in the country. A visit to Goldsborough Hall’s gardens would not be complete without a stroll up the quarter-mile Lime Tree Walk, planted by Royalty in the 1920s. Hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, scones can be purchased on the day. FREE garden talks at 12pm & 2pm by the head gardener, and they’ll be a plant stall on the terrace too.£7.50 per adult, children free. Dogs on leads most welcome. Nostell Gardens, Doncaster Road, Nostell, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF4 1QE.  Nostell Gardens are open daily from 11am until 5pm.  Nostell has its own Rose Garden planted with beautiful and often beautifully fragrant roses.  Look out for the spectacular climbing 'Iceberg' rose, which spans the entire length of the 100m redbrick wall that leads along to the Orchard and Rhubarb Row.  For more information, including information for disabled visitors, please click here.

    The Rose Gardens in Regents Park, London are fab – beautiful circular arrangement of climbers/ramblers on rope bowers & tall obelisks, plus large areas planted with shrub roses – picnic where you like among the rose scents.
    NB This article says it lists rose gardens AND events – but I can see only long lists calendar events. This makes it hard just to scan an area just to find rose gardens to visit at any time – irrespective of whether there’s an actual ‘event’ or not.
