Gardens Offering Free Entry or Special Offers for Mother’s Day 2023

This year, Mother’s Day, will be held on Sunday 19th March 2023 (in the UK).  If you’re looking for a special family day out, the following gardens and attractions are all offering special offers to celebrate Mother’s Day 2023.  The offers differ, so I’ve listed the details of each event for Mother’s Day 2023 offer separately for every venue.  I hope this information helps you to enjoy a memorable and very special day out with your family!  I wish you a very happy and enjoyable day together.

Make a Mother’s Day Card at Ness Botanic Garden

On Sunday 12th March 2023, from 10.30am until 3pm the educating team at Ness Botanic Garden will be on hand to help children and grandchildren make an extra special Mother’s Day card at Ness Botanic Gardens, Neston Road, Ness, Neston, South Wirral, CH64 4AY.  Children will design their own Mother’s Day card using pre-pressed flower and leaf specimens from the garden. Attendees will find out more about the Ness Herbarium and how specimens are prepared to be sent to Royal Botanic Kew and other important centres for scientific research purposes.  There will be three sessions, from 10.30am until 11.30am and from 12.30pm until 1.30pm, and finally from 2pm until 3pm. Half-Price Entry for Mums!

Make a Mother’s Day Posy at Stourhead

On Saturday 18th March 2023 and Sunday 19th March 2023, from 10am until 3pm, children have the opportunity to make a Mother’s Day posy in the Discovery Centre at Stourhead, near Mere, Wiltshire, BA12 6QD. NB: The charge is £6 per posy; or more information, please click here.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea

Compton Acres, 164 Canford Cliffs Road, Poole, Dorset, BH13 7ES, are serving a special Mother’s Day Afternoon tea from 2pm on Sunday 19th March 2023.  Mothers receive a free potted spring plant and all guests enjoy free entry to the gardens.  Pre-booking is essential, for all the details, please click here.

Free Entry for Mothers and Grandmothers at the Eden Project

The Eden Project in Bodelva, Cornwall, PL24 2SG, are offering free entry to Mothers and Grandmothers, on Mother’s Day, Sunday 19th March 2023, provided the Mums and Grandmas are accompanied by at least one of their children or grandchildren.  Please note that all visitors, including Mothers and Grandmothers, will need to pre-book their visit to the Eden Project; for all the details, please click here.

Free Entry for Mothers at Canonteign Falls

The special events listed below will be held over the Mothering Sunday weekend, but are not (as far as I am aware) offering any special offers to mothers.

Friday 17th March 2023Saturday 18th March 2023, and Sunday 19th March 2023 – RHS Orchid Show at RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey, GU23 6QB.  The RHS Orchid Show celebrates orchids. Visitors will see displays of orchids and admire exhibits of orchids grown by the Mathers Foundation, the Royal Horticultural Society, and specialist growers.  Visitors can purchase orchids from Burnham Nurseries, specialist growers, and the Wisley Plant Centre. Experts will be on hand to answer your questions and a programme of talks is planned. Information for disabled visitors can be found here.

On Saturday 18th March 2023Samlingstead Garden will be opening from 10.30am until 3pm for the NGS at Samlingstead, Near Roadway Corner, Woolacombe, Devon, EX34 7HL. This garden is within two minutes of the north Devon coastline and Woolacombe beach. It has six distinct areas; the cottage garden at the front, the patio garden to one side, the swallows garden at the rear, the meadow garden, the orchard, and the field (a 500m walk with newly planted hedgerow). The patio garden is planted with spring-flowering bulbs. Many garden birds nest in the trees and nest boxes. The walled garden has bulbs in spring and bedding in summer and the fence line boundary is cordoned by dogwood shrubs planted as part of the three-year-old hedgerow planted with 2,500 hedgerow plants with species such as white-thorn, blackthorn, crab apple, field maple, hazel, dog-rose and others. This is to encourage birds and wildlife to have cover and build bio-diversity and create habitat. There will be a plant sale at this opening. For more information, please click here.

On Saturday 18th March 2023Cascades Gardens will be opening from 12 noon until 4pm for the NGS at Cascades Gardens, Clatterway, Bonsall, Matlock, Derbyshire, East Midlands, DE4 2AH. Visit this four acre garden that’s surrounded by woodland, cliffs, a stream, pond, and an old limestone quarry. Inspired by Japanese gardens and Buddhist philosophy, there are secluded garden rooms for relaxation and reflection. Admire this beautiful landscape and garden planted with a wide collection of unusual perennials, conifers, shrubs and trees. On Saturday 18th March 2023, from 11am until 4.30pmSummerdale House Garden will be opening for the NGS.  Summerdale House, Cow Brow, Nook, Lupton, Cumbria, LA6 1PE.  This 1½ acre part-walled country garden is set around C18 former vicarage.  Several defined areas have been created by hedges, each with its own theme and linked by intricate cobbled pathways.  This garden displays relaxed, natural planting within a formal structure. The garden’s rural setting enjoys fine views across to Farleton Fell. Visitors can admire large collections of auricula, primulas and snowdrops.  There will be a plant stall at this opening. Saturday 18th March 2022 from 10am until 3.30pm the Alpine Garden Society are holding a Show at Kirbie Kendal School, Lound Road, Kendal, The Lake District, LA9 7EQ.  There will be the chance to purchase and admire a range of alpine plants at this event.  For more information, please click here.

On Saturday 18th March 2023East Ruston Old Vicarage, East Ruston, Norwich, Norfolk, NR12 9HN, will open their garden for the NGS from 12pm until 4.45pm.  There is so much to see at this 32 acre garden; there’s a walled garden and topiary.  Visitors can admire Daphnes and spring flowers in the gardens.  For all the details, please click here.

On Sunday 19th March 2023, from 2pm until 5pmBrockamin will be opening for the NGS, at Brockamin, Old Hills, Callow End, Worcestershire, WR2 4TQ. Visitors can explore this one and a half acre informal garden and view Dr Margaret Stone’s daffodil and pulmonaria collection.  There’s the chance to purchase plants from the Plant Sale and enjoy teas and home-made cakes.  For all the details, please click here.

Saturday 18th March 2023 – Plant Fair at Digby Hall, Hound Street, Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 3AA.  Open from 10am until 2pm, admission is free.  For all the details, please click here.

On Saturday 18th March 2023 and Sunday 19th March 2023Haldon Grange Garden will be opening from 1pm until 5pm for the NGS at Haldon Grange, Dunchideock, Exeter, Devon, EX6 7YE. Parts of this thirteen acre garden date back to the 1770s. This hidden gem boasts one of the largest collections of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Magnolias. and Camellias. There is a six acre arboretum with mature and rare trees, complemented by a lake and cascading ponds. There will be a plant stall at this opening; for all the details, please click here.

Castle Kennedy, Stranraer, Scotland, DG9 8SJ. Castle Kennedy Gardens will be opening from 10am until 5pm for Scotland’s Snowdrop Festival on Saturday 18th March 2023 and Sunday 19th March 2023. Visitors can admire the snowdrops by the 16th-century Castle Kennedy ruins; specialist varieties are waiting to be discovered inside the Walled Garden. Special access around the Black Loch at this time of year means visitors can witness a wonderful part of the Garden which is usually closed to visitors.

On Saturday 18th March 2023 and Sunday 19th March 2023Winchester House will be opening from 1pm until 5pm for the NGS at Winchester House, Abbey Manor Park, The Squires, Evesham, Worcestershire, West Midlands, WR11 4HQ. Visitors can admire this one acre garden’s snowdrops, Hellebores, and primulas. There will be a plant sale at this opening. For more information, please click here.

On Saturday 18th March 2023 and Sunday 19th March 2023Pear Trees Gardens will be opening from for the NGS at Pear Trees, Elder Street, Wimbish, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB10 2XA. This half acre garden enjoys open views across farmland to Rowney Woods. The front garden has mixed fruit trees underplanted with spring bulbs. There will be a plant sale at this opening. On Sunday 19th March 2023Trench Hill will be opening from 11am until 6pm for the NGS.  Trench Hill, Sheepscombe, Gloucestershire, GL6 6TZ.  This three acre garden is set in small woodland with panoramic views.  Visitors can admire plantings of spring bulbs with thousands of snowdrops and hellebores.  There’s a woodland walk, two small ponds, a waterfall and larger conservation pond.  This garden is run on organic principles.  There will be a plant sale at this opening, for all the details, please click here.

On Sunday 19th March 2023Godinton House Gardens will be opening from 1pm until 5pm for the NGS at Godinton House, Godinton Lane, Ashford, Kent, TN23 3BP.  At this time of year, Godinton House’s three acre Wild Garden will be a mass of daffodils, primroses and Fritillaries.  The tearoom will be serving cakes and refreshments. On Sunday 19th March 2023Copton Ash, 105 Ashford Road, Faversham, Kent, ME13 8XW, will be opening from 12 noon until 4pm for the National Gardens Scheme. Copton Ash is a one and a half acre garden; this private garden will be opening for the NGS. Visitors can admire Hellebores and alpine plants; for all the details, please click here.

On Sunday 19th March 2023Members of the Norfolk Plant Heritage Group will be meeting at 2pm at Bawburgh Village Hall, Stocks Hill, Bawburgh, Norwich, Norfolk, NR9 3LL. At this meeting there will be a special talk from Kevin Hughes. Kevin will talk about his love of plants and how he took over Cally Gardens, near Castle Douglas in Scotland. Kevin is a very knowledgeable plantsman and ecologist; the Specialist Plant Centre at Cally is a treasure trove of exotic and rare hardy plants gathered from around the globe.  Kevin will be bringing plants to sale at this meeting. Sunday 19th March 2023 – Southwell Minster Plant Hunters’ Fair, Church Street, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0HD.  This plant fair opens from 11am until 4pm.  For all the details, please click here.
