Garden Organic Online Talk: Head Gardeners Year at Westminster with Chris Collins

Wednesday 12th October 202210:30am to 12:00pm Chris’ talk will cover the major milestones of his tenure as Head Gardener at Westminster Abbey as he began a completely fresh start and re-vamp the garden to revitalise it. The talk will also include an insight into the garden’s importance to the Abbey community and day-to-day life as well as a comprehensive look at the plants and the basic designs Chris used, including some of the herbs used extensively throughout the history of the garden. Topics covered during the talk: Plant propagation – creating a collection of plants, Organic turf care – using organic practices for extensive lawn care, Composting and soil improvement – the importance of composting, Plant husbandry & plant selection. Chris Collins’ horticultural experience spans many years and many locations. After training at the Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, he spent time working in Africa and Japan, before returning to the UK in 1998 as Higher Botanical Horticulturalist at Kew Gardens, then as Head Gardener at Westminster Abbey. Chris also held the highly sought-after position of BBC Blue Peter Gardener for 9 years, during which he was involved in the challenging relocation of the garden from London to Media City in Manchester.
