Date: Tuesday 9 May 2023

On Tuesday 9th May 2023, from 5pm to 7pm BST – Nature Walk: The Wild and Uncommon on Wimbledon Commons. Wimbledon Common is a large area of heathland and woodland in south-west London, part of a wider SSSI that includes Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common. The Common has an impressive list of wild plants thanks to its diversity of habitats, including freshwater ponds and streams, acidic grassland, lowland heath and mixed deciduous woodland. With a range of familiar favourites and some more unusual species, Wimbledon Common is a must-visit for any keen plant enthusiasts in London. Leif Bersweden is a writer, botanist and nature communicator with a face-down, bottom-up approach to watching wildlife. He grew up in rural Wiltshire where he taught himself how to identify the local flora and has championed our wild plants and the joy they bring ever since. He is the author of The Orchid Hunter (2017) and Where the Wildflowers Grow (2022). Meeting point: Meet by the Wimbledon War Memorial on the edge of Wimbledon Common (Coordinates 51.42615304644881, -0.22215041586456716). Precise meeting location and other instructions a day before the walk. This is an in-person walk that will be led by Leif. Please arrive a few minutes early so that you don’t miss out!
