Congleton Bath House & Physic Garden

Date: Saturday 9 September 2023

On Saturday 9th September 2023, see inside a rare surviving Georgian Bath House, and find out about the medicinal plants from 10am until 4pm at Congleton Bath House & Physic Garden, Colehill Bank, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 3AD.  The listed buildings comprise a late-Georgian Bath House and a neoclassical garden shelter.  Built by the owners of a nearby house, the Bath House is a rare survivor of the 18th and 19th-century passion for health-giving cold-water bathing.  It contains a private plunge pool in the basement and an upstairs warming room.  The garden shelter reflects another contemporary fashion – the design of a picturesque landscape view from the house, set with classical architectural features.  The Physic Garden contains a range of plants, from annuals and perennials to shrubs and trees, that have been used in medicine throughout history.  “Nature’s pharmacy” is represented by our wildlife area.  Being in a town largely built on textiles, we have also developed a Plants in Industry area.  The Herb Society’s Barbara Wilkinson will lead garden tours, and there will be plants and other items on sale.  There will be guided tours of the Bath House and garden shelter throughout the day.  For more information, please click here.
