Ferndene House Garden Opening & Plant Sale is from 12.30pm until 4.30pm on Sunday 19th May 2024 at Ferndene House, 2 Holburn Lane Court, Holburn Lane, Ryton, Tyne And Wear, NE40 3PN. The Holburn Beck flows through woodland, which has been managed to attract a wider variety of birds and wildlife and is now underplanted with woodland plants. Work is ongoing in the woodland, as it is in the garden, which has espaliered apple trees started in 2012; wild flower and grass planting in 2014 around swales to take rainwater run off; herbaceous border planted in 2014. Central area has herbaceous planting to follow the tulips and alliums. Woven willow work – fencing and gate. A living willow ‘hide’ was constructed on the edge of the pond in 2017 and a gravel garden planted in late 2017. In 2020 a new meadow area was planted, with a rill running through it. This is being redeveloped in 2023/4. A damp/shady area, with a boardwalk, has been planted with a woodland/clay soil tolerant mix of plants. In 2023 an area of colurful stemmed willow (for basket making) was planted. Directions: In Ryton Old Village, 8m W of Gateshead. Off B6317, on Holburn Ln.
