Aerangis macrocentra

Family: Orchidaceae

Countries: Africa, Madagascar

Aerangis macrocentra can be found in Madagascar.  This miniature orchid species is often found low down, almost at ground level, growing as an epiphyte, upon moss and lichen covered trees, in the forests of the highlands of central Madagascar.  Aerangis macrocentra produces long, pendant, many flowered white inflorescences.  On mature plants, each inflorescence is comprised of many small flowers.

Due to the plant’s beauty, sadly Aerangis macrocentra has suffered as a species from the over collection of wild specimens to supply the demand from orchid collectors and the orchid trade.  Accordingly, the numbers of Aerangis macrocentra plants that are growing in the wild in the plant’s native habitat have declined and this orchid is becoming rarer.  The habitats in the Central Highlands, the North, and East of Madagascar, where Aerangis macrocentra originates from have also endured damage from human destruction from: logging, forest clearing, farming, etc.

You can see how the first Aerangis macrocentra specimen I bought is growing in my BiOrbAir Review – Growing Miniature Orchids in the BiOrbAir (part six).  This link takes you straight to the trial update which was written at the time when this Aerangis macrocentra specimen was first introduced to this terrarium.  By reading this and the continuing trial updates, you can discover how well this miniature orchid grows and develops.

I also have another two Aerangis macrocentra specimens, which were introduced to my Madagascar BiOrbAir Terrarium.  You can follow these miniature orchids’ progress right from when these specimens were first introduced to this terrarium, via this link to my Madagascar BiOrbAir Terrarium.  In this and the continuing instalments, you can find out how well these two young specimens grow and develop.  When I set up my Tall Orchidarium for the first time, I moved my two Aerangis macrocentra plants into this new enclosure.
