Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’

Family: Apiaceae

Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’ is a hardy perennial plant that blooms in the summertime, producing stunning ruby coloured, round, pincushion type flowers, so typical of Astrantia.  The flowers are popular with bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects.  Prompt deadheading of the spent Astrantia blooms will help to prolong and extend your plant’s flowering.  Astrantia blooms make great cut flowers

Plant Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’ in any moist, well-drained soil, in a sunny, partially shaded, or shaded location.  I’ve found that Astrantias are happier in a heavy soil, through my trials I found that Astrantia aren’t as successful in very sandy, free draining soils.  These hardy perennials flourish in cool, wet summers.

Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’ plants grow to around 90cm (3ft) tall, and around 40cm (1.3ft) wide; depending of course on your soil and your plant’s growing conditions.
