Athyrium species

Family: Pteridaceae

Countries: Africa, Madagascar

This Athyrium species is a small sized, terrestrial fern that can be found growing in the wild, in both Madagascar and Africa.  A great choice for a terrarium or bottle garden, ferns of this Athyrium species enjoy warm, humid conditions, and bright but indirect light.  As an added bonus, this fern grows to no more than 15cm (6 inches) in height – so it won’t outgrow your bottle garden.

This is a tender fern that favours growing in humid areas that enjoy temperatures from 18-27C (65-80F).  I’d guess that this fern’s minimum temperature would be around 12C (53F), but I’ve not tested this theory!
