Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii is an evergreen perennial; it’s a tuberous, perennial, trailing vine that produces pretty heart-shaped, variegated leaves. This is an attractive and rather charming plant, which originates from Zimbabwe. Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii makes an excellent houseplant! It’s ideally suited to growing in hanging baskets, where the plant’s long, trailing stems, and beautiful heart shaped leaves can be admired and appreciated.
Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii has many common names, which reflect the plant’s handsome, heart shaped leaves, such as String of Hearts, Hearts Entangled Vine, and Hearts On A String. This is a very beautiful houseplant, which is easy to grow, drought tolerant, and requires very little care and attention.
If you’re thinking of growing Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii, it’s absolutely essential that you provide good drainage for your plants, as this plant will not tolerate being waterlogged. Use a free draining, gritty, peat-free compost, and incorporate perlite into your peat-free compost mix. Water your plant in, until water runs through the drainage holes at the base of your plant, and then only water your plant again, when your plant’s compost has dried out. I find my plant is very drought tolerant – I might not water my plant for a month (sometimes longer!) and it doesn’t show any ill effects.
My Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii plant is growing happily in an area which is quite shaded. I suspect my plant would be even happier if it received a little more sunlight, but it has grown well in this position for six years.
Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii can be grown inside a drier terrarium, but do ensure that your terrarium is not watered too often, as this plant does not grow well in continually moist, wet conditions. Use a very gritty, well drained, peat free growing medium in your terrarium and water after the compost has dried out, to ensure success.
