Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’

Family: Marantaceae

Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ is a handsome, tender plant with large dark aubergine coloured, rounded leaves, which are accentuated with some utterly mesmerising markings: a central line of fuchsia pink, which is complimented by by a halo of the same colour; it’s really quite something!  The colourings of this incredible Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ plant’s leaves remind me of the colours of the 80s, when black and pink was de rigueur!

This is a tender plant that thrives in a warm and humid environment.  Place your Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ in a position where your plant can bask in soft, filtered lighting.  Avoid direct or harsh lighting, which may harm your Goeppertia’s sensitive leaves.  Morning sunlight tends to be softer and much more preferable than afternoon sunlight, which is usually more intense and therefore more damaging to this plant’s foliage.  If you have a bright room, then position your Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ further away from the windows, nearer the corners of the room, where the light is not as intense; on the other hand, if your room is very shaded, your plant will tolerate being closer to the window.  Avoid growing Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ on a window sill or self above a radiator, as the plant will quickly deteriorate in this situation, as the drying heat rises through the plant and damages it.

Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ thrives in a humid environment.  This tender plant would be very happy growing in a warm and steamy bathroom, in a position that enjoys soft, filtered sunlight; perhaps from sunshine shining through the bathroom’s frosted window.  These plants relish a moist atmosphere and they’ll flourish when they’re misted with a daily spritz of rainwater.  To increase the humidity around your plants, group your Goeppertia with other houseplants; alternatively, grow your plant near an indoor water feature, above a saucer of pebbles and water, or near a bowl of water.

Providing the optimum temperature range is another very important factor in caring for Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’; this plant is tender and it cannot and simply will not tolerate cold temperatures.  Therefore, ensure that Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ never experiences temperatures that fall below a minimum temperature of 16C (61F).  Avoid placing your plant near front or back doors, or draughty windows, as this Goeppertia will not appreciate a cold shock, fluctuating temperatures, or a draughty location.  Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ thrives in rooms that provide consistently warm temperatures of around 18-23C (64-73F); alongside high humidity levels and bright, but filtered, indirect light.

Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Surprise Star’ is a sensitive plant that doesn’t appreciate leaf shine but grows happily when watered with rainwater.  If you’re unable to collect rainwater then you can use tap water, but rainwater is preferable.
