Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’

Family: Fabaceae

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’ is a Modern Grandiflora Sweet Pea cultivar; a recent introduction, which was raised and introduced by the renowned Plant Breeder, Keith Hammett, in Auckland, New Zealand.

This is certainly the darkest coloured sweet pea I know.  Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’ plants produce incredibly handsome, dark maroon coloured flowers, that appear in some lights to be ‘almost black’.  It’s a stand out plant with striking flowers, that’s for sure!  The blooms have a dusky quality, but in some lights the flowers display a slight iridescence.  Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’ flowers produce a sweet and heady perfume.  This is a super sweet pea to grow in your garden.

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’ is a hardy annual.  This is an easy to grow climber with a strong disposition and quite a vigorous growth habit.  Plants grow up to 2.4m (8ft) tall.
