Lathyrus odoratus ‘Black Knight’

Family: Fabaceae

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Black Knight’ is an Old Fashioned sweet pea cultivar that was introduced by the renowned sweet pea breeder, Henry Eckford, in 1898.  Plants produce rich maroon-purple coloured flowers.  Lathyrus odoratus ‘Black Knight’ small sized flowers are borne on stems holding two, three, or four flowers; plants also produce some single flowered stems.

This is a tall, climbing sweet pea variety that grows up to around 2.4m (8ft) tall.  Plants are self-clinging and will happily scramble up a wigwam or trellis.  Sow Lathyrus odoratus ‘Black Knight’ seeds from October to May, in the UK.

As with all sweet peas, it’s important to keep picking your sweet pea flowers each week, to prevent flowers fading on the plant.  Once a sweet pea flower has faded it will develop into a pea-like (NB. sweet peas are not edible) seed pod.  Once your plants have started producing seed they won’t be keen to flower again; so harvest your sweet pea flowers at least once a week, to keep your plants flowering throughout the summer months.
