Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’

Family: Fabaceae

Countries: Americas, Peru, South America

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ is an Old Fashioned Sweet Pea cultivar, which produces maroon and magenta bicoloured flowers.

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ is similar in appearance to Lathyrus odoratus ‘Cupani’, the most noticeable differences being that Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ is a more recent cultivar, which produces up to four bicoloured blooms, which are slightly larger in size than those produced by Lathyrus odoratus ‘Cupani’.

This is a lovely plant to have in your garden, as Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ plants produce beautifully fragrant flowers.

Plant Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ in moist, well drained soil, in a sunny or partially shaded spot.  Lathyrus odoratus ‘Matucana’ plants grow to around 2m (6.5ft) tall, depending on the plant’s growing conditions.  You’ll need to provide your plants with a tall wigwam, or a support frame that’s tall and sturdy enough for your sweet pea plants to climb.  The best sweet pea supports feature plenty of twiggy branches or netting with places for your sweet pea plants’ tendrils to cling on to.
