Lathyrus odoratus ‘Romeo’

Family: Fabaceae

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Romeo’ is a Modern Grandiflora Sweet Pea cultivar, which was introduced by Unwins Seeds, in 2000.  This is a lovely sweet pea to grow.  Plants produce white flowers with a purple-blue picotee edge.  One of the best things about this sweet pea is its fragrance, the flowers are highly perfumed, they produce a delicious, sweet and heady perfume.

There are a number of sweet pea cultivars that produce similar looking flowers.  Lathyrus odoratus ‘Romeo’ flowers are somewhat similar in appearance to Lathyrus odoratus ‘Betty Maiden’, Lathyrus odoratus ‘April in Paris’, Lathyrus odoratus ‘High Scent’, and Lathyrus odoratus ‘Albutt Blue’.  These are all lovely sweet peas that produce fragrant flowers.

If you intend to grow Lathyrus odoratus ‘Romeo’, please don’t forget Lathyrus odoratus ‘Juliet’!

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Romeo’ grows to around 1.8-2.5m (6-8ft) tall.  You’ll need to provide your plants with a wigwam, an obelisk, or a wire fence or a frame, to support the plants as they grow.  Remember to plant these scented sweet peas close to a path, a seating area or a window, so you can enjoy your sweet peas’ fragrant flowers.
