Masdevallia tentaculata

Family: Orchidaceae

Countries: Americas, Ecuador, South America

Masdevallia tentaculata is a miniature, epiphytic orchid species, which is endemic to Ecuador.  Plants of this particular orchid species are really quite striking when they are in bloom, as this plant develops very tall flowering stems, the size of these flowering stems is especially impressive when you consider the small size of the plant that produces these soft yellow coloured blooms.  Masdevallia tentaculata flowers are held so high above the plant’s leaves, this plant’s flowering stems are at least twice as tall as the height of the plant’s leaves themselves, so the flowers are very well displayed.  The specific epithet, the second part of this orchid’s name, the name of this distinct orchid species is tentaculata, which references this orchid’s sepaline tails – the form of this orchid’s flowers.

Masdevallia tentaculata is a cool growing orchid species that requires very humid, moist, cool conditions to succeed.  This orchid species favours growing under filtered, diffused, indirect light, in a humid environment, where the plants will receive frequent misting, and where temperatures remain in the cool range.
