Phalaenopsis ‘La Paz’ is a stunning orchid with gorgeous, sunny yellow flowers! These Phalaenopsis’ blooms are coloured with such an uplifting yellow, they have a real lightness, and the colour has a charming softness. The two lateral sepals (the two lower petals) of every ‘La Paz’ flower are highlighted with the lightest of freckles, which are ever so pretty! The centre of each bloom is white and the lip is golden; the colours tie together beautifully. ‘La Paz’ produces semi-translucent, soft yellow coloured flowers; this really is a lovely Phalaenopsis.
Phalaenopsis hybrids make excellent houseplants! Phalaenopsis ‘La Paz’ thrives inside our homes; this is a tender orchid that mustn’t be exposed to temperatures lower than 13C (55F). When placing your plant, position it away from radiators, storage heaters, gas fires, open fires, stoves, and fans, or any other equipment that will dry any moisture from the air. Phalaenopsis ‘La Paz’ thrives in a humid environment and often flourishes when grown next to a frosted glass window. However, remember to take care to avoid placing your Phalaenopsis above a radiator, as this is one of the worst situations for a Phalaenopsis to find itself – a Cacti or succulent would be more suited to this arid environment.
Phalaenopsis ‘La Paz’ is happiest growing in bright light, but ensure your plant is positioned in an area that enjoys soft, bright sunlight and not harsh or direct light which could scorch the plant’s leaves.
I collect rainwater to water my orchids. Our tap water contains salts that are harmful for plants, so rainwater is much better for orchids. I have water butts installed in my garden and I use all kinds of contraptions to capture rainwater! I fertilise all of my orchids with Orchid Focus products. I use Orchid Focus Grow during the autumn and winter months, and I’ll also use this fertiliser for plants that aren’t in bud or flower, and I’ll use Orchid Focus Bloom in the spring and summer months, and this feed is also given to orchids that are blooming or in bud. I only fertilise orchids that are actively growing, dormant orchids receive only rainwater. When I am using Orchid Grow Fertilisers, I dilute them with rainwater and apply using a hand-held mister; I spray the fertiliser over the plants once a week. I feed my orchids for three weeks in a row and then on the fourth week, I’ll give my plants pure rainwater and a week off!
In 2022, the Royal Horticultural Society presented Phalaenopsis ‘La Paz’ with an Award of Garden Merit. Orchids that are presented with an Award of Garden Merit are considered to grow and flower well given their appropriate growing conditions.
