Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’

Family: Araliaceae

Countries: Hainan, Taiwan

Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ is an evergreen plant that’s often grown as a houseplant.  Commonly known as the umbrella plant, these plants produce palmately compounded dark green leaves, with soft creamy yellow coloured variegation.  Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ plants’ leaves display a distinctive shape and form that resembles that of an umbrella.

Plants are often long lived and resilient.  Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ is renowned for its ability to cope with poor conditions and little care.

This is a large upright shrub, that can grow very tall.  A plant’s height and size will depend on its particular growing conditions, but Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ plants can easily reach around 3m (10ft) tall.  Plants can be pruned to suit a more compact space, so you won’t need a ceiling extension.  But left unattended, in ideal growing conditions, Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ plants can extend to heights or 5m (16ft) or more!

Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ thrives with regular watering.  Plants favour moist but well drained compost.  Allow your plant’s compost to dry out a little before watering again.  This is an easy going, adaptable, and resilient plant, that flourishes in bright, but indirect light.  Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ can also be grown in a more shaded position.

Ensure that your Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ plants are kept in warm, frost free conditions, away from doorways, entrances, or areas that might become cold or drafty.  Plants thrive in temperatures from 18C (65F) to 25C (77F).  I’d say that the minimum temperature for Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ plants would be 13C (55F).
