Heritage Open Days 2023

I’m mindful that my recent article about Gertrude Jekyll may have inspired you to want to learn more about this inspirational gardener and horticulturist, so in this post I’m sharing information on an array of Gertrude Jekyll themed events, as well as gardens, vineyards, and interesting places you can visit during the Heritage Open Days.

Every September, the Heritage Open Days allow visitors to experience local history, culture, and architecture.

For the past fourteen years, I’ve grown a delicious harvest of Florence Fennel bulbs by going against traditional gardening advice; instead of ending my sowings of Florence Fennel seeds by June or July, I’ve continued sowing seed throughout August and September.  Gardeners in Northern regions of the UK would be unlikely to succeed following my advice, but in my Surrey garden’s sandy soil these later sown seeds have produced a wonderful last hurrah of medium-sized sweet tasting Florence Fennel bulbs.

Daffodils are such cheerful flowers.  Full of hope and heralding the start of springtime; daffodils are a joy to behold.  Being such a popular flower, daffodils have been bred, selected, and re-selected, over a great many years, which has resulted in the creation of a diverse range of daffodil flowers.

If you’re looking for a superb day out this springtime, I’ve got plenty of ideas for you!  Here are some cheerful daffodil gardens where you can take an uplifting walk among the glowing daffodil flowers, in the spring sunshine!  Some of these gardens, like Winkworth Arboretum, are planted with early flowering daffodils that bloom in December, January, and February.

Heritage Open Days 2019

An annual event, held every year in September, the Heritage Open Days allow visitors to experience local history, culture, and architecture.  The Heritage Open Days provide a rather wonderful opportunity to visit interesting, historic, beautiful, and important places, which are normally closed to the public.  These special events also give visitors an opportunity to enjoy free entry to some rather lovely places that usually charge an admission fee.

This year, Father’s Day will be held on Sunday 16th June 2019.  I hope that this list of special garden events and activities held over the Father’s Day 2019 weekend will help you to enjoy a memorable, happy, and very special weekend with your family and friends.

Here are the gardens and venues that are celebrating Father’s Day 2019 by offering discounts or free entry to fathers.

Wisteria

I adore Wisteria!  This divinely fragrant climber is in its prime in May.  Wisteria brings a welcome touch of romance to the garden, complimenting both modern and historic architecture.  Whether your style is cutting edge or traditional, grand or homely, Wisteria adds another dimension of flowers, scent, and interest, to enhance your home and garden.

Rather than purchasing plants online, I’d recommend you visit a nursery or garden centre this month and choose a grafted Wisteria plant.

Plant Heritage are a plant conservation charity, based in Guildford, that encourage horticulturists, botanists, and gardeners to grow, propagate, share, and conserve a wide range of plants to protect and safeguard the variety of plants we have available to grow and enjoy.  This year, Plant Heritage are celebrating their 40th anniversary, so to mark the occasion they asked garden designer Jackie Currie to create an exhibit for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018, to publicise the value of Plant Heritage’s work.

I am a sentimental old soul, I treasure so many things that most folk would not think twice of throwing away.  I also keep things, just in case they become useful one day.  Yes, you could describe me as a hoarder!

I love our planet.  I love fields, meadows, glades, forests, hills, marshlands, bogs, mountains, streams, rivers, and oceans.  I love to see wildflowers growing in the wild.

Inside the Floral Marquee at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2017, I met Jackie Currie, a passionate Allium expert and Garden Designer, from Surrey.  The RHS judges presented Jackie with a Silver-Gilt Medal, for her first ever exhibit at Hampton Court, which featured a selection of Alliums, from Jackie Currie’s National Collection of Alliums.

Beth: Congratulations on your beautiful Allium exhibit and your success here at Hampton Court, Jackie!

Cleve West designed The M&G Garden for The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016.

The RHS judges awarded The M&G Garden a Gold Medal.

Swatton Landscape, who built The M&G Garden to Cleve’s design, were presented with The Best Construction Award.  This is a brand new award, the only one of its kind; it was presented for the first time this year to recognise the importance and skill of the contractors who build the gardens at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

We are fortunate to have skilled and talented garden design and construction specialists with a wealth of experience, working in our local area, project managing, designing and building beautiful private gardens.
